Hello, I’m Yusuke Higuchi, a Nationally Certified First-Class Tatami Master from Higuchi Tatami Shop in Tokyo.

Have you ever seen tatami mats that start to sag, loosen, or bulge after just a few years? This is a common frustration for many owners, but it is actually a preventable issue.

The secret to a tatami mat that stays firm for decades lies in a hidden, labor-intensive process called "Kamachi Sewing" (Artisanal Stitching).

What Is "Kamachi Sewing"?

Kamachi sewing (also known as kamachi-toji or uwa-toji) is the specialized process of firmly stitching the tatami surface (the natural igusa rush mat) onto the tatami core.

While this step is invisible once the mat is finished, it is the single most important factor in determining:

  • The Tension: Creating a surface as tight as a drum skin.
  • The Aesthetic: Ensuring a perfectly flat, beautiful finish.
  • The Lifespan: Determining if the mat will last 5 years or 40 years.

Hand-Stitching vs. Machine-Stitching: The 40-Year Difference

Today, most tatami shops use machines for efficiency. However, there is a legendary difference in quality that only human hands can achieve.

  • Master Hand-Stitching: By using the craftsman's full body weight to tighten each stitch, the rush mat is permanently locked to the core. Properly hand-stitched tatami can last over 40 years without ever loosening.
  • Machine Sewing: Machines apply a constant, limited tension. Over time, these stitches naturally loosen, leading to the "sagging" or "peeling" often seen in mass-produced mats.

Why This Matters for Modern & International Homes

Recently, thinner tatami mats (around 30mm thick)—such as our Global Foldable Tatami—have become popular worldwide. These modern mats are structurally more sensitive to humidity and temperature changes.

Our master hand-stitching is essential for international shipping. It ensures the tatami remains structurally sound during the 9,000 km journey to places like Greece or the USA, where changes in air pressure and climate would cause machine-made mats to lose their shape.

The Hidden Step: "Maedate" (The Foundation)

Before the sewing begins, we perform a crucial step called "Maedate" (pre-setting). This involves stretching and aligning the rush mat to its absolute limit.

If the Maedate is poorly executed, even the best stitching cannot save the result. At Higuchi Tatami Shop, we treat these two steps as a single, inseparable soul of the craft.

My Training in Kyoto: The "Craftsman's Callus"

During my rigorous apprenticeship in Kyoto, I spent years perfecting this technique. To achieve the necessary tension, I had to wrap the heavy thread around my fingers and pull with all my strength.

In the beginning, my fingers would bleed daily. I used tape and bandages to protect the mats from blood, but the pain was a constant companion.

Today, while the pain is long gone, my right index finger has become noticeably thicker than my left. This "craftsman's callus" is my permanent badge of honor—a physical mark of the thousands of mats I have tightened to perfection.
